Hello, I’m Merja, the founder of Kulkuri Hostels!
Before establishing the hostel, I personally had no background in entrepreneurship. Quite the opposite, in fact. Having witnessed my entrepreneur parents’ struggles and triumphs throughout my childhood, I was firmly resolved never to embark on that path myself. Yet, life had other plans. A trip to the Gili Islands in Indonesia with my husband changed everything.
It was there, embraced by the turquoise seas of the Gili Islands in Indonesia, that I envisioned my future hostel. Getting to know the local brothers and their selfless recycling efforts, I realized I wanted to create a place where sustainability and eco-friendliness are at the core. I aimed to offer travellers a chance to journey with a cleaner conscience.
So, I got to work. In 2020, amidst the global struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic and unprecedented challenges in the tourism industry, I opened the doors of Kulkuri Hostels (formerly known as Naurava Kulkuri) in Hämeenlinna. Despite the odds, I always firmly believed in life’s support, and with my resilience and determination, I proved to myself and others that success is achievable.
By 2023, new winds were blowing. I had been dreaming for some time about opening a second hostel, and finally found the perfect spot in Hauho: A lovely, tranquil building previously used for accommodation, situated by a lake yet close to a busy main road. It was love at first sight. The doors of Kulkuri Hostels in Hauho opened in June 2023.
Sustainable development, the cornerstone of our business, is evident in the day-to-day life of our hostels in many ways. Each space and room is unique, furnished with recycled or handmade items. In all our choices, we prioritize quality, durable materials, use only eco-friendly products, and emphasize recycling.
Today, our small family business looks confidently towards the future. By my side are my husband Janne and my daughter Sara, with whom we tread the path of growth and development with calm but determined steps.
Warmly welcome to stay with us at Kulkuri Hostels!
